Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC)

I went and had a look around the IPRC, which is essentially a one stop shop for those interested in the self-publishing scene in Portland. The facilities include; letterpress, screen printing, computers to use on site, an ever expanding zine library, as well as the use of typewriters, photocopiers, printers, guillotines, binding machines and anything else you might feasibly need.

They’ve been up and running for 15 years, and their space now is fantastic - sounds like it has come a long way from the days of “a photocopier in a closet”.

It is based on an affordable membership scheme, enabling anyone to get involved. They also do a lot of outreach projects, courses, and collaborate with local organisations.

Thanks to Chloe and Asher, two of the volunteers that let me wander around and distract many of their members. I left feeling somewhat envious that London hasn’t got anything quite like this to offer.

We transformed room 320 in PSU’s Art Building, for the second of the Similarly Different exhibitions. The show will be up for the next month or so. It was a good turn out, and a really nice way to round off the project.

There are plans to keep this collaboration between PSU and UCA Farnham going next year, quite how, we aren’t yet sure, but watch this space!

(We are also looking at creating more formal relationships between the Graphic Design Course at PSU and Graphic Communication at UCA Farnham, so keep an eye out for those developments as well).

Cult of the Ugly Discussion - Crowd Talks

At times the format and subject felt ill considered and under researched, which may be a disservice to the organisers. It’s great to see young groups and individuals taking the initiative and organising design criticism events, it’s a movement that has felt sorely lacking in the London in the past few months.

However, in conversations after the event it does feel like our design scene is guilty of being too passive. At times the discussion lacked the voice of the other side, meandering without truly entering into a debate of the aesthetic and design movement (I use that term loosely, I am undecided as to whether it can truly be termed a movement). As an audience member I am wholly guilty of this too, not voicing my questions or thoughts until after the fact or in a private group.

We are too accepting of viewing the same people’e work and style again and again without questioning it or why it it and should be relevant. A strange dichotomy when the European and UK aesthetic, arts education and design scene is being lauded in the US and oft copied.

We are far too insular - visible again and again in the repetition of illustrators and designers at creative conferences and at events such as Pick Me Up. The worst case, when the same illustrator has work, all be it slightly different, in two to three separate areas across a show.

Why should this happen in Londons design equivalent to Art basel or classic art fairs?

Publication Studio

I went and met Patricia and Antonia at Publication studio in Portland, Oregon.

Publication Studio is a print on demand organisation, where they print artist’s and author’s work that they admire. Individuals and companies are also able to go and get their work published.

It is great to see further evidence of innovation in print publishing, and the fact that Publication Studio is run for profit (and has been since it’s inception in 2009), is testament to the fact that there is still an appetite for print.
